βFor me, a still life is about capturing an idea, a moment in time, or simply observing the quiet interplay of light and shadow.β

Still life sketch study, Mia Oehlmann. 2019, charcoal on A1 paper.

'Memories Inherited', Mia Oehlmann. 2018, oil on stretched canvas, 61x91.5cm. A still life consisting of a number of items that have been passed down to me through my parents and family.

'Daily Struggles' Still life, Mia Oehlmann. 2021, oil on Belgian stretched linen, 42x29.7cm. - Commissioned by client. This still life is depicting the everyday struggle someone with a disability lives with, the sense of everything 'pushing against' making at times even the simplest task difficult. I used some everyday items from around the house and was also conscious that I maintained a cheerful colouring so as to not necessarily associate depression or negativity with 'disability'.

'Precious Time', Mia Oehlmann. 2019, oil on stretched canvas, with gold, silver and copper leaf, 76 x 76cm. In this painting I wanted to express the passage and concept of Time and the environment. It is one of two paintings where the second depicts the same subject in a dystopian, life-drained way (an effect of Global Warming).

Monochrome still life study of light and dark, Mia Oehlmann. 2019, oil on canvas paper, A3.

'Afternoon Tea', Mia Oehlmann. 2017, oil on canvas paper, A3. This was one of my very first still lives I did.

Ala Prima still life study afternoon light, Mia Oehlmann. 2019, oil on canvas sheet, A3. This still life was an exercise in capturing the light before it moved, done in a fast moving painting study of light, cast shadows and reflections in glass.
